Role Overview

At Cortland Partners, you map the story of your success. We don't adhere to the status quo, we love outside industry perspective, and we thrive on exploring possibilities and reimagining solutions. As an innovative leader in multifamily, our high performance continues to drive exponential growth – and we invite you to join us on our journey towards real estate excellence. With tools and guidance to sharpen your skills, you can forge your own career path, love what you do, and let it show.

As a Construction Intern, you participate in the day-to-day operations of the Construction team, assist team members with tasks related to new construction, renovation and capex projects, and manage your own near-term projects.

Roles You'll Play

THE SPONGE

  • Interact with Construction and Design professionals to build an in-depth understanding of real-world construction methods and challenges
  • Gain familiarity with typical construction tasks, including construction services procurement, contract award and buy-out, and the creation of RFI’s, AIA industry-standard documents, and contract documents
  • Understand the contributions and responsibilities of the Development and Investments teams throughout the life of a project
  • Learn how Cortland’s philosophy, principles, and policies guide the conduct of our projects

THE GO-GETTER

  • Coordinate and inspect contractor work across a variety of new projects with the goal of ensuring they meet established schedule, budgetary, and quality agreements
  • Participate in and occasionally lead construction meetings, track change order requests and problem issues, and prepare and distribute project status reports
  • Research and recommend cost-saving and green initiatives
  • Contribute feedback aimed at improving the operational success of the projects, including improved safety, cost control, and environmental effectiveness
  • Lead your own projects, as assigned, and present your results to the team

THE NETWORKER

  • Participate in as many formal and informal development activities, including “Lunch with the Leader” forums, as you can
  • Ask your colleagues on the Construction team, including senior executives, about our industry and the typical (and not-so-typical) career tracks at Cortland
  • Broaden your horizons by reaching out to team members in other functional areas, such as Supply Chain, Architecture/Interior Design, Marketing, Talent, IT, Facilities and Services, Investments, Operations, and Finance/Accounting

Our Vision of What Success Looks Like

  • Our managers and senior executives have pegged you as an “unconventional thinker” and “future leader.”
  • You’re so effective in collaborating with a wide variety of roles — not to mention a wide range of personalities — that there’s talk of nominating you for office mayor!
  • Your enthusiasm for learning and volunteering to help is so contagious, your colleagues feel extra motivated and seem to have a little more pep in their step.

Your Building Blocks of Success

  • Full-time sophomore or junior college student, preferably enrolled in construction/building science, engineering, architecture and design, real estate, or related program of study
  • Demonstrated interest in a property management career
  • Strong communication, planning, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail; ability to prioritize multiple assignments under tight deadlines
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
