At Cortland Partners, you map the story of your success. We don't adhere to the status quo, we love outside industry perspective, and we thrive on exploring possibilities and reimagining solutions. As an innovative leader in multifamily, our high performance continues to drive exponential growth – and we invite you to join us on our journey towards real estate excellence. With tools and guidance to sharpen your skills, you can forge your own career path, love what you do, and let it show.

As an Accounting Intern, you participate in the day-to-day operations of the Accounting team, assist team members with their accounts payable and general accounting tasks, and manage your own near-term projects/assignments.

    Roles You'll Play

    • Interact with accounting and finance professionals to build an in-depth understanding of real-world accounting methods and challenges
    • Gain familiarity with typical accounting tasks, including bank reconciliations, financial statements, and month-end closes
    • Understand how the work of other teams, including the Construction, Investments, and Community teams, get reflected in financial statements
    • Learn how Cortland’s philosophy, principles, and policies guide the conduct of our projects and operations

    • Accurately process construction invoices through the job cost accounting system
    • Record and monitor deposits, employee expenses, outgoing wires, and other transactions
    • Lead your own projects, as assigned, and present your results to the team
    • Research and recommend process improvements to drive efficiency and overall effectiveness

    • Participate in as many formal and informal development activities as you can, including “Lunch with the Leader” forums
    • Ask your colleagues on the Accounting team, including senior executives, about our industry and the typical (and not-so-typical) career tracks at Cortland
    • Broaden your understanding of our company by reaching out to team members in other functional areas, such as Operations, Supply Chain, Architecture/Interior Design, Marketing, Talent, IT, Facilities and Services, Investments, and Construction

Our Vision of What Success Looks Like

    • Our managers and senior executives have pegged you as an “unconventional thinker” and “future leader.”
    • You’re so effective in collaborating with a wide variety of roles — not to mention a wide range of personalities — that there’s talk of nominating you for office mayor!
    • Your enthusiasm for learning and volunteering to help is so contagious, your colleagues feel extra motivated and seem to have a little more pep in their step.

    Your Building Blocks of Success

    • Full-time sophomore or junior college student, preferably enrolled in accounting or related field of study
    • Demonstrated interest in a property management career
    • Strong communication, quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
    • Strong work ethic and a positive, can-do attitude
    • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
